Kawah Ijen Sulfur Mine

Kawah Ijen Sulfur Mine

Kawah Ijen or Ijen crater is a calm beautiful bluish crater lake where sulfur is mined along the edge of it. You better prepare some stuff before you go there. Some tips and guide on what to bring and going there.

Going There:
The nearest airport is Juanda Airport at Surabaya, which is an approximately 5-7 hours ride to the crater. It's best to rent a car with a driver for a day instead of using taxi services.

There is a lot of illegal transport services at the airport who will insist you on taking their service, while they're not dangerous, they will extort you for more money in the end despite of the price deal on the beginning. So plan and choose your agents and hotels beforehand.

The best time to go to Ijen is at the morning between 6.00 to 10.00 am. Because the wind blows the acid smokes of sulfur to the walkpath to go there later at 10.00 am. It will be hard to climb down or up when it got covered with those sulfur smokes.

Bring:

  • Djarum 76 (or other kretek) cigarette packs. Some miners will ask you for smokes, give one person a cigarette, not the whole pack.
  • Water bottle. Lots of walking involved.
  • Mask. Get prepared when the sulfur smoke gets you.
